Ever thought about when opinions become unhelpful judgments? How can you check yourself for the difference?
When we hold an opinion, there is usually an element of openness and grounded self-awareness. Emotionally, opinions tend to feel calm, steady, and flexible. We recognize that our perspective comes from our own experiences, and we remain open to learning or hearing other views. When an opinion hardens into unhelpful judgment, the emotional tone shifts. Judgment tends to be more rigid and emotionally charged. It carries a sense of superiority, frustration, or even moral condemnation, leaving little room for nuance or empathy.
| Opinion | Unhelpful Judgment |
|---|---|
| Feels calm and grounded | Feels emotionally charged or tense |
| Acknowledges personal perspective | Assumes one “right” way |
| Open to discussion or differing views | Closed off or dismissive of other perspectives |
| Curious and reflective | Critical or condemning |
| Flexible and adaptable | Rigid and absolute |
Examples:
Opinion: “I personally prefer to wake up early and be productive in the morning.”
Harsh judgment: “People who sleep in are lazy and clearly don’t care about their lives.”
Opinion: “I value structure and planning at work.”
Harsh judgment: “People who don’t plan ahead are a mess and will never be successful.”
Opinion: “I feel best when I follow a clean, whole-food diet.”
Harsh judgment: “Anyone who eats processed food doesn’t respect their body.”
What impacts does moving from opinion to unhelpful judgment have at work? At home?
