We talk a lot about optimism at work. We like to “focus on what can go right,” “stay positive,” “look for the upside.” Mindset matters, but sometimes the thing blocking everything that could go right… is something (or someone) that needs to go.
Not every problem is solved by more resilience. Not every challenge is a mindset issue. Not every setback is a sign to “try harder.” Sometimes the most productive, healthy, forward‑moving choice is subtraction.
It might be:
- A process that creates more friction than value
- A role that no longer fits
- A habit that drains energy
- A relationship (professional or personal) that keeps pulling you backward
- A commitment you’ve outgrown but keep honoring out of guilt or inertia
We often stay in situations long after they’ve stopped serving us because we’re trying to be positive, loyal, or “strong.” Sometimes it’s recognizing what’s weighing you down that allows you to solve issues.
When you remove the thing that’s misaligned you create space for momentum again. You make room for the good to shine. So yes, keep asking yourself: What else could go right? AND yourself permission to ask: What else could go… right? What needs to go so the right things can finally grow?
