At some point, many of us have a realization: The person we’ve been waiting for to show us the way, build our confidence, or tell us what comes next might not be coming. That can be a hard thing to accept, especially early in our careers.
- We may expect a manager to recognize our potential.
- We may wait for the perfect opportunity to appear.
- We may hope someone else will have the answers.
Eventually, we have to start asking ourselves a different question:
What am I willing to do next?
This doesn’t mean you never need support. Good mentors, leaders, friends, and coaches can make a huge difference. Instead, it means your growth can’t depend entirely on someone else seeing your value before you see it yourself.
Self-leadership looks like:
- asking for the opportunity instead of waiting to be picked
- learning from mistakes instead of letting them define you
- making decisions even when you don’t have every answer
- taking responsibility for the direction you want your life to go
No one else can do your growing for you. The person who can encourage you, challenge you, and keep moving forward with you has been there all along.
It’s you.
Career growth is about learning to trust yourself, advocate for yourself, and take ownership of your path. Growth happens when you stop waiting for someone else to provide the direction, confidence, or answers you’re looking for.
The song below explores that moment, a transition from hoping someone else will tell you want to do to you recognizing that you own your future. If you process ideas through music, this may be a helpful reflection alongside this message:
