For a long time, I thought personal growth happened because someone else showed up.
- A mentor.
- A friend.
- The right opportunity.
- The right timing.
- Someone who finally believed in me.
Those things can help but aren’t required. Over the past few weeks I’ve released articles exploring the same idea from different angles: you have more influence over your life than you may realize.
It starts with recognizing that the person you’ve been waiting for might be you. No one else can live your life or make your decisions for you.

Along the way, you’ll probably discover that your biggest obstacle isn’t always your circumstances. Sometimes it’s the conversation happening inside your own mind. Learning to recognize that negative voice is often the first step toward changing it.

There will be days when you feel stuck. We’ve all been there. Feeling stuck doesn’t always mean you are though. Sometimes the next step is simply taking one small action instead of waiting until you feel ready.

That also means taking ownership of your choices. Accountability isn’t about beating yourself up for where you are today. It’s about recognizing that your next decision is still yours to make.

Of course, it helps when someone believes in you. Encouragement can change the direction of a person’s life. Remember though, that your future can’t depend on someone else’s confidence in you. Eventually, you have to believe enough to keep going, even when no one is cheering you on.

Then there’s fear, fear has talked countless people out of opportunities, conversations, dreams, and new beginnings. Fear isn’t a stop sign. It’s one voice asking to be heard. You still get to decide whether it makes the decision for you.

Finally, remember this: other people’s opinions are exactly that, their opinions. They may shape how they see you, but they don’t have to define how you see yourself.

None of us gets everything right. We all have doubts. We all get discouraged. We all wish someone would make the hard parts easier. Every day gives us another chance to make one decision that moves us a little closer to the person we want to become.
